High school graduation ceremonies are a type of reflection. If you are graduating for the first time, you undoubtedly are going through the traditional pomp and circumstances of all that the ceremony reflects. Your college decision, regardless of where, has most likely been made and you are ready to enter that next stage of your life.
But what if you never continued your education? Graduation ceremonies may be stirring up memories of opportunities missed. Perhaps you had dreams of going to college but finances and life got in the way. For some, perhaps there was the belief that you were done with school and just wanted to enter the working world. For others, perhaps family life was the main priority and you took whatever job you could find with the hope that it would allow you to enter the real world and move up based on your job experience. That certainly was not without the realm of possibilities; however, life is not stagnant and for many, some industries became obsolete or did not develop the way you may have imagined.
But now that you are older and have a better understanding of the strength of a college degree, you may want to go back. Whether it is personal fear or apprehension as to whether you can make it as an adult college student, today the possibility to finally earn a college degree is available to anyone and everyone that so desires.
The first step you should be taking is to get yourself mentally prepared to go back to school. Whether you choose to enroll in a classroom setting or take online classes, avoid thinking that you are too old to return. Concentrate on the fact that your work and life experience gives you a distinct advantage over young adults and teens. You understand what a work environment is like and what it takes to succeed on the job. You now may know the workplace rules that separate those that are passed over for promotion and those that know how to play the game.
Perhaps you experienced being passed over for promotions due to outdated skills, outsourcing or even for some, lack of a college degree. That may help you to stay focused and concentrate on improving your overall skills and making you more knowledgeable. By returning to school, you are stating to future employers that you are willing to improve your knowledge base and use it for advancing your career.
Going to college as an adult, requires avoiding distractions. If you attended a traditional college, you most likely found yourself distracted by the party scene of college or by the mere fact that you were away for the first time and no one was pushing you to attend class, study and find a balance at school. By taking online classes, you avoid many of these distractions. Most likely, you have a clear objective in mind and that is to earn your degree. By that aspect alone, you will find getting through your coursework much simpler.
That is not to say you won’t have distractions. Perhaps you are working while attending school and have difficulty using your off hours to get your homework or studying done. Perhaps you are raising a family and have off hour obligations. While certainly juggling many apples, if you utilize your time properly, you will find that you can accomplish this extra task. Keep focused on the end result – you will finally have that coveted college degree.
Another point to keep in mind is that even though you may be trying to accomplish this goal through online classes, help is available. Online classes have advanced rapidly over the last decade and with the help of forums and other social networking groups, you can establish contact with other students, even those in the same category as yourself, and establish a support group. You may have questions about the assignment or just need the added support.
They are called support groups for a reason, no matter what that support is, and there is most definitely strength in numbers. Perhaps you will meet other classmates that share much in common with yourself and may have words of wisdom to get you through this process. You may even find that younger students bring a different set of strengths to the table. They may have a better grasp on technology and be able to help you out if you do not understand how to use the chat room for class or are having difficulty downloading an assignment. The point is that you should never underestimate the ability of other online students to offer assistance, even assistance from your teacher.
With graduation ceremonies taking place across our country, why not start to create your own graduation memories and experience the satisfaction that comes with knowing you have achieved a goal.
